
Minecraft 1.18 Ore Distribution: Best Y-Level for Every Ore
The Caves & Cliffs Part II update turned mining completely on its head. You know that old habit of digging at Y=11 for diamonds? Bin it. The world now stretches from Y=320 up top all the way down to Y=-64 at bedrock, and ore stopped sitting in those flat, lazy layers we all memorized.
Thing is, most ores now follow a triangular spread. Densest at one specific depth, then thinner the further you climb or sink away from it. Hit that sweet spot and your haul multiplies. And here’s the relief: that system hasn’t shifted since 1.18. Not in 1.19. Not 1.20, 1.21, or the Copper Age drop. These depths hold on whatever version you’re probably running right now.
First, though — you need to actually know your depth.
How to read your Y-level
- Java Edition: smack F3. Your Y sits right there next to
XYZ. - Bedrock Edition: pause, go Settings → Game, and flip on Show Coordinates.
Don’t skip this. Everything below assumes you can read that number.

Nether bonus: Ancient Debris (for Netherite) spawns only in the Nether, Y=8 to Y=119, peaking at Y=15.
Coal
Coal’s got two tricks up its sleeve. One batch scatters fairly evenly through its range, while the other follows that triangular curve and peaks up around Y=96. Either way, it’s the most common ore in the game — you’ll trip over it near the surface and all through the mountains. A wooden pickaxe does the job, so grab it first for torches and smelting and move on.
Copper
Copper is the new ore Caves & Cliffs brought in, sitting from Y=-16 to Y=112 and peaking near Y=48. Dripstone Caves are absolutely loaded with it. You’ll need a stone pickaxe. Smelt it into ingots, then build copper blocks, lightning rods, and Spyglasses — and don’t be shocked when it slowly greens over time. That patina is just oxidation doing its thing.
And the Copper Age drop (that’s the 1.21.9 update) made copper actually worth hoarding. It dropped in the Copper Golem for auto-sorting your chests, plus a stack of new copper blocks and fixtures. So yeah, stockpile it.
One myth while we’re here: “Malachite” and “Terrakota” are not Minecraft ores. People mix them up with copper and terracotta from other games. They don’t generate in your world.
Iron
Iron’s the weird one. It shows up in two separate clusters:
- Y = 16 underground — your reliable, always-there source.
- Y = 232 up in the mountains — giant blobs that often sit exposed right on the surface.
I can’t tell you the relief of cresting a snowy peak and spotting raw iron just lying there, instead of sweating through another hour of tunneling. If you’re near tall mountains, surface-mining iron beats digging every single time.
Gold
Overworld gold runs Y=-64 to Y=32 and peaks at Y=-16. But the real trick is Badlands. In those Mesa biomes, gold cranks up hard and spawns way higher — any level above Y=32. Need gold in bulk? Skip the deep mining and head for the orange cliffs. Gold also turns up in the Nether, though that’s a different beast entirely.
Redstone
Redstone rides almost the exact same band as diamond: Y=-64 to Y=16, peaking at Y=-59. So a single deep tunnel around Y=-58 hands you both. Any pickaxe pulls redstone dust (up to 8 dust per block with Fortune III). Want the ore block itself? That’s what Silk Touch is for — but you don’t need it.
Diamond
Diamonds peak at Y=-59, about as low as you can sensibly go. Most folks actually mine at Y=-54 instead. You give up a hair of density to sit just above the worst lava lakes, and it’s so much safer.
True story: I once nearly tunneled straight into a deepslate lava lake at Y=-54. Heart dropped into my boots. A bucket of water saved my stupid self. That’s the whole reason I recommend -54 over -59. Lapis Lazuli
Here’s the part most guides skip. Lapis generates in two batches. The first peaks around Y=0, same as you’d guess. But there’s a second, buried batch that spreads all the way down to Y=-64 — and it has a quirk: that lower batch can’t spawn exposed to open air. None of it. So if you’re just wandering caves hoping to spot lapis on a wall, you’ll miss the bulk of it. Strip mining is pretty much mandatory if you want a steady supply. Keep that in mind before you blame your luck.
Emerald
Emerald’s the pickiest ore in the game, and the only one that’s biome-locked. It only appears in mountain biomes — Jagged Peaks, Frozen Peaks, Meadow, Grove, Stony Peaks, Windswept Hills, the lot — from Y=-16 to Y=320, peaking at Y=224. Dig in flat plains all you want; you’ll never find one. Go climb.
Optimizing your mining strategy
The new generation demands a new approach. A few things that’ll save your sanity:
- Mine the peak, not a fixed layer. Y=-59 (or -54) for diamond and redstone, Y=16 / Y=232 for iron, Y=-16 for gold.
- Past Y=0, stone turns to Deepslate. It mines slower. Bring at least an Iron Pickaxe (Diamond with Efficiency if you can).
- Carry a water bucket. The deep levels are lava territory. A bucket saves you and your loot.
- Fortune III on your diamond and redstone pickaxe multiplies the haul.
- Iron? Look up. Those exposed mountain blobs are the fastest source going.
- Gold? Badlands. Surface gold there beats deep mining without question.
