Minecraft Diamond Level 1.18+ — Best Y-Level and Strip-Mining Setup
Minecraft changed ore generation forever in the Caves & Cliffs Part II update. If you are still digging at Y=11 or Y=12, you are standing in the wrong century. Diamonds now spawn deep underground, and the distribution is so different that old habits will cost you hours.
I wasted an entire evening strip-mining at Y=-16 before I checked the chart. Do not be me. Here is the exact Y-level, the tunnel layout that actually works, and the gear that turns diamond hunting from a chore into a quick supply run.
The Best Y-Level for Diamonds in Minecraft 1.18+
Diamond ore generates between Y=-64 and Y=16, but the frequency is not even. The closer you get to the bottom of the world, the more common diamond ore becomes.
| Y-Level | Diamond Spawn Frequency | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Y=-59 | Highest | Deepest common mineable layer; lots of ore, but lava risk. |
| Y=-58 | Very high | Safer floor height; stand on this level while mining. |
| Y=-54 to Y=-57 | High | Good compromise if lava pools are annoying. |
| Y=-16 and below | Moderate to high | Better than older versions, but not optimal. |
| Y=11 to Y=12 | Low | Old pre-1.18 level; not worth targeting now. |
Practical rule: mine a 2-block-high tunnel at Y=-58, with your feet on that level. Your head is at Y=-57, which exposes Y=-59 through Y=-56. That captures the peak without walking directly into as many lava lakes as Y=-59.
Pickaxe and Enchantments
You need an Iron Pickaxe minimum. Stone, wood, and gold pickaxes will break diamond ore but drop nothing.
| Enchantment | Why it helps |
|---|---|
| Fortune III | Up to 4 diamonds per ore block. The single biggest yield boost. |
| Efficiency V | Mine stone faster, so you cover more blocks per hour. |
| Unbreaking III | Fewer pickaxe repairs between trips. |
| Mending | Repairs the pickaxe with XP, making it effectively permanent. |
Silk Touch is useful if you want to move the ore block to a central processing room or save it for a Fortune pickaxe later. For pure speed, Fortune III is better.
Tunnel Spacing: the 1×2 Strip Mine
The classic branch mine still works, but the spacing matters more now because ore blobs are smaller and deeper.
- Dig a main corridor at Y=-58.
- Every 2 blocks, dig a 1×2 side tunnel 50–100 blocks long.
- Your side tunnels should be 2 blocks apart, measured center-to-center. That leaves a 1-block wall between them.
This spacing exposes the maximum surface area without wasting time on overlapping sight lines. Ore veins at this depth are usually 1–4 blocks wide, so 2-block spacing catches nearly everything while keeping tunnel count reasonable.
Lava and Other Hazards
Lava lakes generate most commonly around Y=-54 to Y=-60. Bring a bucket of water and place it quickly when you break through into a lake. The water turns the surface obsidian and lets you walk across safely.
Other things to watch for:
- Dripstone caves — pointed dripstone falls and hurts. Look up.
- Deep dark biomes — sculk sensors and the Warden. If you see sculk, slow down or leave.
- Deepslate — replaces stone below Y=0. It takes slightly longer to mine, so bring an Efficiency pickaxe.

FAQ
What is the best Y-level for diamonds in Minecraft 1.18+? Y=-59 has the highest raw frequency, but Y=-58 is safer and almost as productive.
Can diamonds spawn above Y=0? Yes, rarely up to Y=16, but the concentration is low. Do not bother hunting there.
Do I need Silk Touch for diamonds? No. Silk Touch moves the ore block; Fortune III gives more drops. Use Fortune for normal mining.
What pickaxe do I need for diamonds? Iron or better. Stone, wood, and gold do not drop the item.
How far apart should branch tunnels be? Two blocks apart, center-to-center, with a 1-block wall between tunnels.
